As I write this, the SCCA National Convention is one day in the rearview mirror, the Southeast Division Annual Meeting in St. Simon’s Island is the next exit (first weekend of February) and Atlanta Region is just weeks away from our first activities of the year.
The 2018 Atlanta Region Solo season gets underway at Atlanta Motor Speedway with a Test and Tune day on Saturday February 17th, with the first event the following day.
The very next weekend is the Annual Membership Meeting on Saturday February 24th from 2pm to 4pm at the region office – Regus Office Park, 5051 Peachtree Corners Circle, Suite 200, Norcross, 30092. I hope you’ll join us.
As you may have read, some SCCA activities have undergone a rebranding. Club Racing is now SCCA Road Racing and non-competitive activities like PDX are now referred to as Track Events.
Our season opener of Road Racing is the Majors Tour event March 17 & 18 at Road Atlanta. This weekend also includes a Track Event to take place during Sunday Quiet Hours.
Getting back to the National Convention, this was my first visit to this annual event. The snowy weather mid-week affected arrivals for many from the southeast, but I did manage to arrive late Thursday. I missed the Annual Meeting and Region Awards ceremony, but Assistant RE A.J. Schramm was on-hand to accept the Best New Rally Program Award – kudos to our Rally Chairman Mark Johnson on the well earned recognition.
Friday and Saturday were filled with multiple seminars and presentations covering nearly all aspects of SCCA activity, as well as a focus on leadership training. I was particularly pleased with this aspect of the convention as the presentations were informative and motivating. By the time you read this, I expect the presentations will be available on scca.com and I recommend that you take a look.
Best of all, I heard some great ideas that other regions are using to attract new members as well as organizing fun events.
Also announced at the convention is the creation of a Time Trials Nationals event to be held September 28 – 30 at the NCM Motorsports Park in Bowling Green, KY. This will be much like the existing National Championship Runoffs®, Solo Nationals, RallyCross National Championship and United States Road Rally Challenge.
In my January report, I failed to mention the members recognized at our holiday party for achievement in 2017. When you see them at the next event, be sure to offer your congratulations.

It’s only February 2018, but 2019 will be a milestone year. It marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of SCCA, and the 70th anniversary of the founding of Atlanta Region.
Many thanks to all you; I’m always happy to hear your comments.
Bob Hudson, Regional Executive
